Overview

Ol Doinyo Lengai — the Mountain of God in Maasai — is the world's only active carbonatite volcano, erupting black lava that turns white on contact with air and rain. Rising 2,960 metres above the scorched floor of Tanzania's Natron basin on the Kenya border, this night ascent begins at midnight to reach the crater rim at sunrise, with the flamingo-carpeted shores of Lake Natron glowing pink far below. The descent reveals the lunar landscape of Natron's salt flats and Maasai pastoralists driving cattle across the ancient caldera plain.
